Week 7: Other Group's Topic

Week 7: Other Group's Topic

Google was created by computer scientists. The development began in 1996 and Google launched in 1998. The positives of Google are that they have mail, drive, and docs. They also have other websites that they host on their search engine. Google is a nice thing to have for people that have internet, which is becoming more common as we progress through the years. It used to be a rare commodity that people would have internet. Google allows people to stay informed with the current news and things like politics, where there are many different sides of the story and a lot of information that either side can leave out. Google allows people to be more educated on topics like politics because all information is available to anyone who chooses to search for it, and this can help people make more informed decisions than they might have if they did not search for articles that share different information on the topic, this information might be more detailed than what people might have initially thought. Google also allows for the freedom of speech because users can make edits to certain pages, or even make blogs that will be on sites that can be found on Google, which allows people to get their opinions and thoughts out to other people more easily. Google had, “In 2000, Google began selling advertisements associated with search keywords” (Wikipedia), which is important because companies can buy their way to what people will see when they make Google searches. This can be harmful to what people see because a word can be bough to show websites that might have biased when reporting on things like news. Overall, Google is a very useful tool for users because it allows ease of access to information and can keep people up to date on current events.

Week 6: Group Project (Facebook)

Facebook is an important social media app that is used by many people around the world. Facebook allows users to post things from text, to photos, to videos which allows the user to express themselves and other people can see this. It has become an app that even companies use when trying to hire people, I have heard of some companies doing a background search on potential employees by checking their Facebook account and seeing if there is anything that they had done wrong in the past that might suggest that they are not someone they want to hire. Facebook was founded by "Mark Zuckerberg while he was a student at Harvard" (Wikipedia), which shows that people can create things if they set their minds to it. Facebook originally started out for Harvard students only, then it spread to Ivy League Colleges, then it was open to all colleges. A few years after Facebook was developed, they released a public version of Facebook to anyone that is over the age of thirteen (Wikipedia). Facebook is good for people today in age because most people are using a smartphone and have Facebook, which allows people to connect with others. It helps people stay in touch with friends, like when people graduate high school and go to college. Facebook can be used to speak freely, which goes along with the First Amendment, so it can be an important platform in today's society with the use of digital media. Facebook changed its policy on hate speech after a campaign against them for having advertisements that were negative towards women. This is a way that is limiting the First Amendment on Facebook, and this is also the first incident with any kind of speech on Facebook. Facebook has recently gone under investigation for stifling smaller competitors. Facebook is also a way for people to share their opinions or event that have happened with others. This is important because users are able to see these and see the other side of the story or to see more details about events that have happened, unlike news media that can be biased and share only one aspect with people. Facebook also has advertisements for smaller and less know news sites, which can help smaller news companies and those companies might have less bias than more well-known news sites. Facebook had also been under investigation for user privacy, and advertisements on Facebook use people's information to determine what to show them through targeted advertisements (Wikipedia).
